Defenceman Jeremy Roy had a hat trick, and forwards Mitchell Stephens and Nicolas Roy both added a pair of goals in the win.

A power play goal by Latvia’s Kristaps Zile gave the team a boost early on, and the Latvians later regained the lead after answering a tying goal Nicolas Roy with a short-handed score for a 2-1 lead. The teams again traded goals and Latvia went into the first intermission up 3-2 courtesy of Ricards Bernhards.

But the second period was a rough one for the Latvias, who watched as forward Brett Howden sparked a six-goal run by the Canadians. Latvia didn’t respond until an early third period goal from Filips Buncis trimmed the lead to 8-4, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Latvia allowed three more to close out the game.

It wasn’t a perfect win for the Canadians by any stretch, as they gave up six goals to the newly-promoted Latvians. But the team did not lack for scoring, with several players finding the back of the net.

Canada gets a day off before its next matchup against tournament hosts Switzerland. Latvia will try to rebound from the loss against 2014 silver medalists the Czech Republic.
