In the final preliminary round game, the Czech Republic put up an impressive 5-0 win over Switzerland, as the team gears up for a run at another U18 medal.

Daniel Vladar posted a 20-save shutout as the Czechs simply overmatched the Swiss on offence.

With 4:35 to go in the first period Czech captain David Kase broke the deadlock, jumping on a fat rebound chance after a great effort by Jakub Zboril to get the puck into the zone through three Swiss defenders.

Then the Czechs added another two minutes later on a beautiful rush by Kase, creating some space by dangling the puck between his legs then sending a backhand pass to Michael Spacek for the 2-0 lead. At the other end Switzerland managed only four shots on net and couldn’t get enough pressure in the Czech zone.

Things didn’t get better in the second period for the Swiss, who didn’t seem to have an answer for the fast-skating Czech forwards. Pavel Zacha took the puck straight down the middle of the ice and got off a shot without beign touched by a Swiss defender for the 3-0 lead. Then the rout was on as Zboril got his second point of the game with a shot from the point to put the Czechs up 4-0. Filip Suchy added another in the third to complete teh 5-0 win.

The Swiss close out the preliminary round with a 1W-3L record, but certainly this one-side blowout to the Czechs is a tough one to take going into a quarter-final matchup against Group A leaders Russia.

Meanwhile the Czech Republic doesn’t exactly have it so easy either in the quarters despite the win. They will draw 2014 U18 World Champions USA, winners of eight U18 tournament gold medals.
